What We Do

Strategen fire management and risk assessment services are relevant to:

  • mining projects
  • land development projects
  • land managers
  • property owners
  • Local Governments
  • State and Commonwealth Government Agencies

Strategen has a team of experienced fire management and risk assessment consultants with practical and regulatory knowledge gained from over 30 years working in fire management, risk assessment, wildfire suppression and fire ecology. The Strategen fire management and risk assessment team remains at the forefront of fire management in Western Australia by understanding the complex and changing requirements of fire policy and technical developments, and leading the way in the development and application of fire management planning and risk assessment techniques for a range of land management agencies and clients. Our fire management and risk assessment consultants have the experience to provide advice at all stages of project development.

Strategen takes a holistic approach to fire management planning, incorporating:

  • on-site fuel hazard and assessment
  • bush fire fuel hazard and vegetation mapping
  • bush fire history
  • wildfire threat analysis
  • project, subdivision and building design
  • hazard separation and defendable space
  • bush fire risk assessment pre and post development
  • building materials assessment
  • landscaping and environmental considerations
  • recommended management actions.
  • extensive GIS and fire hazard mapping.

Western Australian planning authorities are focusing more intensely on fire management following the Keelty Report -A Shared Responsibility: the Report of the Perth Hills Bushfire February 2011 Review (Government of Western Australia 2011), the Victorian bushfires of 2009, the review of Australian Standard 3959 2009 for Construction of Buildings in Bushfire-prone Areas and the Planning for Bush Fire Protection Guidelines, Edition 2 (Western Australian Planning Commission and Fire Emergency Services Authority 2010). Greater onus is placed on land managers, mining companies and developers to prepare comprehensive fire management plans that contain risk assessments at all levels of the bush fire management process.

Over the coming years, land development, population growth and climate change will significantly increase the risk of damage to life and property from fire in Western Australia. Successful fire management will require effective communication between landowners and regulators to establish shared responsibility and build community confidence.

In addition, land use and landscape fire management policy will become increasingly complex as a result of requirements to balance the competing demands of good fire management and maintenance of biodiversity values.

These developments in fire management will see greater emphasis placed on:

  • strategic fire management planning and risk assessment at a local authority or structure planning level including broad scale fire hazard mapping
  • individual fire management plans for individual lots or small subdivisions
  • fire ecology and associated rehabilitation services including the awareness of vegetation requirements pre and post fire.

The Strategen fire management and risk assessment team provides strategic guidance and advice to landowners, developers, mining companies, Local Governments, and State and Commonwealth Agencies on a variety of fire management components including:

  • strategic fire management planning
  • bush fire hazard mapping
  • strategic bush fire risk assessment
  • advice for dwellings, structure plans and subdivisions
  • advice in regard to the Planning for Bushfire Protection Guidelines (WAPC and FESA 2010)
  • implications of Australian Standard 3959 – 2009
  • fire ecology and rehabilitation
  • rangeland and Kimberley fire management advice.
