Environment Roundtable for Resources 2030 Taskforce

Environment Roundtable for Resources 2030 Taskforce

Removing complexity to make growth and development happen.

As an invited contributor, Strategen’s CEO Darren Walsh recently travelled to Melbourne to participate in the Environment Roundtable, created for the Resources 2030 Taskforce.

The Resources 2030 Taskforce was established by Senator the Hon Matthew Canavan, Minister for Resources and Northern Australia, to develop a long-term vision for the Australian resources sector. The Taskforce’s findings will form the basis for the first National Resources Statement in Australia since the 1990s.

The Taskforce seeks to bring forward bold but attainable policies and reforms that can ensure future success of the resources sector. Key focus areas include:

• developing policies that can attract investment and contribute to regional economic development

• building community support for the resources sector

• removing approval red-tape

• finding new resource deposits

• ensuring Australia achieves a better value add from our resources.

As key input to its work, the Taskforce conducted a series of roundtables as part of a broader process of stakeholder engagement. The Environment Roundtable was established to consider how government and industry can collaborate to reduce the environmental footprint of the sector as well as decreasing associated cost barriers and building an improved social licence to operate.

Strategen’s CEO Darren Walsh participated in the Roundtable with fellow leading environmental professionals and senior resource company representatives from across Australia, to discuss these issues and provide inputs to the Taskforce’s work. The Roundtable session was an extremely positive and collaborative process with strong inputs from the resource sector as well as key scientific organisations associated with the resources sector.

The Taskforce is due to report to the Minister in the next 2-3 months. Strategen looks forward to the publication of the Taskforce work which will be a very positive initiative to assist in securing and improving the resource sector’s future in Australia. Strategen will keep our clients updated on new findings and information as it is released.
